Photography evokes emotions. Photography can turn complexity into simplicity. Photography can create order out of chaos. Photography colors our view to focus on a specific topic and really SEE it. Photography is an expression of the mind. Photography is a study of the world!
It can be all of that, or none of that. Or only part of that. We, as humans, have a choice what we put to the attention of the viewer, or not. We can bear witness, or we can be a voyeur, secretly watching. Though one thing is for sure: great photography needs to be a surprise or the center of recognition. As Simon King puts it in relation to Wildlife Photography:
"Great photography has the capacity to turn the spotlight on the unexpected, to bring the eye to the focus of what makes every moment unique. [...] Almost without exception, it is a passion for the wild world that inspires, drives and thrills the exponents of the art. It is the expression of those people for whom every day, and every moment is a marvel - for whom the difference in every day, be it subtle or otherwise, is reason enough to get out there and witness such diversity first hand."
Foreword by Simon King, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, portfolio 12, BBC Worldwide 2002.
Despite the fact that this quote is already 18 years old (!), it still holds true for exceptional photographic work in Wildlife Photography. It may as well be copied to other lines of photographic work. May your passion be fashion, conceptual, nostalgic or landscape photography, something in the viewer needs to be triggered to keep looking at an image. And wonder about the story behind it...
